The star lots of a forthcoming Sotheby's auction of rare timepieces will include two gold watches with significant historical value.
Sotheby's Sale of Important Watches will take place in Geneva on November 15th and will offer up an 18-c yellow gold and enamel keyless shutter dress watch made by Cartier in tribute to the American Red Cross in 1918.
It is estimated to attract bids of between 80,000 and 120,000 Swiss francs (£47,450 and £71,172).
Meanwhile, a yellow gold chronometer pocket watch - the Negus watch - made for the emperor of Ethiopia in 1893 will also be put up for bidding.
The 18-c gold timepiece was presented to the emperor after Ethiopia gained its first railway line and is expected to sell for between 30,000 and 50,000 Swiss francs.
"We are ... proud to present two historical watches appearing for the first time at auction," commented Geoffroy Ader, European head of watches for Sotheby's.
The auction will be followed by a Sotheby's sale of rare jewellery in Geneva on November 17th. It will include signed pieces by Van Cleef and Arpels, Harry Winston, Cartier and Bulgari.
